Bill.com alternatives: AP and bill-pay options by company size
You have
Bill.com (BILL)
Accounts payable and receivable by BILL. Built for small and midsize businesses automating payables and receivables with accounting sync.
Common reasons to look elsewhere
- Custom approval policies and some accounting syncs sit on higher tiers (BILL pricing page).
- BILL’s Xero sync runs once a day by default, syncs only unpaid invoices and does not sync attachments (BILL help centre).
- Very small businesses may only need bill payment, not full AP workflow.
Consider
- MelioSimple bill pay for small businesses
- QuickBooks Online bill payAlready on QuickBooks Online
- Ramp Bill PayAP automation with a free tier
- TipaltiMany suppliers across countries and entities
- StampliAP teams that live in their ERP
- AvidXchangeHigh-volume mid-market AP
Short answer. Small businesses that mainly pay bills should look at Melio, or at the bill pay already inside QuickBooks Online. Teams that want OCR, PO matching and approvals with a free starting tier should compare Ramp Bill Pay. Mid-market AP teams with many suppliers, entities or countries should compare Tipalti, Stampli and AvidXchange.
The replacements, with the trade-off
Simple bill pay for small businesses
Melio
Why switch to it
Melio pays vendors by ACH, card or check, lets you pay by card even when the vendor does not take cards, and syncs two-way with QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite. Vendors do not need an account.
What you give up
Free ACH comes in monthly allowances by tier, card payments carry a fee, and approval workflows are lighter than BILL’s.
Already on QuickBooks Online
QuickBooks Online bill pay
Why switch to it
Bill pay is now built into QuickBooks Online plans from Simple Start, with a monthly free-ACH allowance, so simple payables need no separate tool.
What you give up
Fewer approval and AP controls than a dedicated AP product; per-transaction fees above the allowance.
AP automation with a free tier
Ramp Bill Pay
Why switch to it
Ramp Bill Pay works standalone with OCR invoice capture, two- and three-way PO matching and approval routing, and syncs with QuickBooks, NetSuite and Sage Intacct.
What you give up
Auto-coding and approval recommendations require Ramp Plus.
Many suppliers across countries and entities
Tipalti
Why switch to it
Tipalti covers supplier self-onboarding with tax-form collection and validation, multi-entity AP and cross-border payments in many currencies.
What you give up
Priced by quote and aimed at mid-market complexity.
AP teams that live in their ERP
Stampli
Why switch to it
Stampli centres the workflow on the invoice, with approvers commenting in place and its AI assistant coding and routing invoices, connected to a long list of ERPs.
What you give up
Quote-based and built for AP teams rather than owners paying a few bills.
High-volume mid-market AP
AvidXchange
Why switch to it
AvidXchange combines AP automation with its AvidPay supplier payment network and embedded ERP partnerships.
What you give up
The vendor itself says it is built for complex, high-volume AP and not necessarily ideal for smaller businesses.

Size decides most of this
| Situation | Look first at |
|---|---|
| A few dozen bills a month, owner approves | Melio or QuickBooks Online bill pay |
| Growing team, approvals and POs | Ramp Bill Pay |
| Hundreds of invoices, ERP-centred AP team | Stampli, AvidXchange |
| Suppliers in many countries, several entities | Tipalti |
Before you switch
Export your vendor list with payment details only through the new provider’s secure onboarding, not by spreadsheet. Clear or document in-flight payments so nothing is paid twice, and decide which system records payments in your ledger during the overlap.
